When you plan well, your overseas travel will maximize fun and minimize inconvenience. In this article we outline helpful hints for people embarking on overseas travel. Of course this is not a complete list, but these tips may help you in avoiding frequent issues while traveling.

On Rental Cars and Hotels

It may seem obvious but don’t leave booking hotels and rental cars to the last minute. In popular travel destinations or places that host major events there may be periods when it is very hard to book a rental car or hotel.

In addition to a record of hotel or rental car reservations, to ensure you are not overcharged, keep a record of the charges stated when you made your reservation.

Suggestions for Airports …

Due to security measures that are now common in airports, ensure you check your flight times and turn up in advance of your flight departs.

Hints for When On an Aircraft …

Try to travel at night to help prevent jetlag.

While alcohol can help you sleep easier, drinking too much of alcohol can dehydrate you. Stay away from alcohol and drink water.

When reserving your flights don’t forget to notify the airline of any food requirements (for instance if you are a vegetarian).

Suggestions for Customs …

As well as your travel documents, make sure you record where you will be staying at in the place you are visiting. Reporting this information to the authorities at customs is a requirement in most countries.

Overseas Travel Packing Hints …

Make sure you can clearly find your luggage. Many items of baggage look the same and a multitude of bags may come off your flight. One easy suggestion is to tie a ribbon to your bag’s handle so you can easily identify your luggage.

If you are changing aircraft at any point in your trip it is good idea to ensure you have more clothes in your carry-on bag. It is not unheard of for flights to be delayed. If you are stranded due to airline delays another set of clothes will be refreshing!

Check the expected weather in the locations you are heading to. This will help you pack clothes suitable for the conditions you are traveling to and avoid overpacking unneeded items.

Ensure you avoid carrying all your valuable items in one piece of baggage. If that luggage is stolen or lost you may be inconvenienced. Split up your credit cards, traveler’s cheques, cash, and bank cards between your purse or wallet, and different pockets and bags.
