Besides Bali, another area of Indonesia which is frequently visited by foreign tourists is Central Java. Here they come to see and enjoy the city of Yogyakarta and, of course, to enjoy the splendour of Borobudur temple.
This Buddhist temple, the biggest in the world, was built more than a thousand years ago, before the spread of Islam. The elaborate structure consists of thousands of carved statues and panels, situated around a three-level tiered temple. Amazingly, Borobudur Temple was constructed entirely out of volcanic and site stones, with no mortar used to join them together.
On their way to this legendary temple, they will pass the mighty Mount Merapi. This large and popular volcano, which literally means fire mountain in Indonesian, is the most active in Indonesia. Over the years, it’s been responsible for a lot of damage and destruction. It most recently erupted in December, 2010.
Just a few miles away from this site, tourists can visit Dieng Temple, a group of temples located on Dieng Plateau in Wonosobo, Central Java. Dieng Temple was probably built in two phases and was rediscovered in 1814, when an English soldier who was on vacation to Dieng saw a cluster of temples submerged in lake water. One of the temple, the famous one is the Arjuna Temple. This temple resembles temples in Gedong Songo complexes, and is laid out on 4 m2 square plan. The body of this temple stands on a 1 meter high base.
Another temple which is looks similar to the previous one is called Semar Temple. This rectangular temple is situated right in front of Arjuna temple. The temple’s plain base is around 50 cm high. Stairs to access the temple’s interior is placed on the east side. The door has no corbelled roof. Then comes the Srikandi Temple. The position of this temple is only a couple of meters to the north of Arjuna Temple. Standing on a 50 centimeter high base, this temple is laid out on a square plan. The temple has a staircase and corbelled roof on the east side.
The next temple is Sembadra Temple. This temple stands on a 50 cm high base on a square plan, with projecting parts on its south, east, and north sides that resemble corbelled roof. The door is placed on the west and has a corbelled roof. While Puntadewa Temple like that of other temples, is not too big, but this temple looks higher. The last temple in this complex, the Gatutkaca Temple is a temple that gives an impression of two-storeyed building, as the roof and body have the same form.
